As you'll no doubt have noticed on some BB's htpp://www.queenonline.com have a censored word list, (set up by the administrators) resulting in certain words being replaced with a less offensive one. Fuck becomes f**k and cunt becomes 'thingies'. (This is only apparent when the post appears on the BB and not at the time of composing by the poster).
In this respect there are currently no restrictions on Mingo City, and unless I'm forced to include such a list, I have no intentions of introducing one. Censored lists can be fooled by inserting a single characters between one or more characters, as they check exclusively, i.e. f-u-c-k, or f'uck will outwit as the software is only looking for the word string 'fuck'.
I'm not a great fan of being told what I can and can't do / see / hear etc. and this has formed the basis of this BB having no real censored list (however I have played with the list for amusement). However, I might amend the cencored list if it become detrimental to the BB, or more to the point that it causes the BB to be taken offline by the owners of the software (YaBB).
I'm a firm beleiver that it is possible for people to communicate intelligently without the use of profanities, although at times I use them myself in some instances, so I'm not really a good example. Or am I? I've been known to upset people online, and in real life if I don't agree with them. Human nature I suppose.....
Administrators or Moderators of this or any BB could remove or change the work-arounds, (f'uck) but it would be a constant unwelcome task for any BB, so this is another reason not to have them. I suppose a few choice words could be worked on, but that's against my ideals anyway. How many permutations of the word 'fuck' could there be? I'll check. (Ming goes to the anagram website freespace.virgin.net/martin.mamo/anagram.html and inserts the characters fuck*-/' as an example. The site doesn't allow anything other that actual letters of the alphabet - great idea that was Ming!) But I suggest you visit the site and enter a word and see how many permutations there could be.
Any character could be inserted to get around it.i.e.
f*uck, fu*ck, fuc*k, fuc*
f'uck,, fu'ck, fuc'k, fuc'
f_uck, fu_ck, fuc_k, fuc_
f-uck, fu-ck, fuc-k, fuc-
f#uck, fu#ck, fuc*#k, fuc#
f:uck, fu:ck, fuc:k, fuc:
...and that's only a few characters for a 4 letter word. There are many other words that some find offensive, so I'm not even going there. I think I've made my intentions clear.
When users aren't aware of a censored list, it becomes increasingly frustating for them and other posters, as they post and repost because of the replacement words appearing in their posts and they don't understand why.
So if you've ever typed something that could be considered "swear-word" only to see "thing" in it's place, now you know why.
Phew!
